Common question · Where to sell your phone

Where to sell a phone to get the most money?

A private sale can bring the highest price, if it goes well. The most money with no risk comes from a buyback shop that pays cash on the spot. At SubSell in Montréal, we pay up to $1,950 cash for a sealed iPhone 17 Pro Max, after a free 5-minute check, and the price is firm before you say yes.

The highest price is not the most money

A phone has a listed price and a net price. The listed price is what the ad says. The net price is what you keep once you take away platform fees, shipping, the discount you gave to close the deal, and the time you spent on it. Marketplace and Kijiji charge no fees, but buyers haggle and some never show up. On eBay, selling fees and shipping come out of the sale. A carrier or Apple gives you credit, not money.

OptionWhat you getWhat eats into it
Private sale (Marketplace, Kijiji)Often the highest asking priceHaggling, no-shows, fake bills or fake transfers, days of messages
eBayBuyers across the countrySelling fees, shipping, waiting, disputes
Carrier trade-inA credit on a new planCredit spread over the bill, tied to a contract
Apple Trade InApple credit or an Apple Gift CardNot money; a fixed grid
Buyback shop (SubSell)Cash on the spot, firm priceA shop needs a margin to resell, so its price is below a perfect private sale

Five ways to add money to your offer

  1. Sell before the next launch. Apple unveils new iPhones every September, and prices for older models go down after that. If you are upgrading anyway, selling in summer pays more than in October.
  2. Give the exact storage. Storage moves the price far more than colour: a 256GB phone is worth more than the same model in 128GB.
  3. Keep it like new. Our prices are for a like-new device; scratches, a cracked back or a worn battery lower the final price, which is confirmed after the free check.
  4. Free it from your accounts. A phone still tied to iCloud or Google cannot be bought at all. Sign out and turn off Find My before you come.
  5. Ask whether an offer applies. Current offers and their terms are on our Offers page.

Student, newcomer, Montréal resident or Laval resident? Up to +10% on the cash price (select models), confirmed in store (the terms).

Related questions

Does Marketplace pay more than a store?

Sometimes a little, if a serious buyer pays your price. Count the days of messages, the haggling and the risk of a fake e-Transfer or counterfeit bills. A store pays less than a perfect private sale, but it pays cash on the spot, with no risk.

Do Apple or my carrier give more?

Apple Trade In pays in Apple credit or an Apple Gift Card, and carrier trade-ins generally pay as bill or device credit. SubSell pays money. Bring your Apple Trade In quote: we try to beat it.

When is the best time to sell a phone?

Before Apple unveils new iPhones in September, while your model is still recent, and while it is like new. Every extra year lowers the price.

How much is my iPhone worth at SubSell?

Up to $1,950 cash for a sealed iPhone 17 Pro Max. Every model’s maximum is on our Sell page, confirmed after a free 5-minute check in store.

Other questions people ask us

  • Where to sell your phone for a good price?

A good price is close to what the phone is really worth, paid in money, and does not change afterwards. Get two or three quotes for your exact model and storage, compare money with money, and favour a firm price. At SubSell, iPhone cash prices are published model by model, up to $1,950 for a sealed iPhone 17 Pro Max.

  • Who pays the most for cell phones?

A private buyer often pays the highest sticker price; buyback shops and mail-in services pay a firm price in money; Apple and carriers pay in credit. Between shops, it depends on the model and condition: compare firm prices, in money. SubSell publishes its iPhone cash prices model by model, up to $1,950 for a sealed iPhone 17 Pro Max, and buys Samsung and Pixel phones too.

  • Where is the best place to sell my phone?

It depends on what matters most to you. For money now with no risk: a buyback shop. For the highest price, with time to spare: a private sale. If you are buying from Apple or a carrier: compare their credit with cash. In Montréal, SubSell pays cash on the spot, 7 days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

  • Is it worth selling your old phone?

Usually yes. A phone loses value every year it sits in a drawer, and an old phone still holding your data is a risk. Keep it only if you will really use it, as a backup or a child’s first phone. Otherwise sell it while it is worth something; if it is too old to sell, it is taken back for free.

  • What iPhone is worth $2000?

New, at Apple Canada (list prices before tax, October 2026): the iPhone 18 Pro Max from $1,899, the iPhone 18 Pro 512GB at $2,049 and the folding iPhone Duo from $2,999. With Québec taxes, even the iPhone 18 Pro 256GB crosses $2,000. No iPhone is worth $2,000 cash at SubSell today: our highest price is $1,950, for a sealed iPhone 17 Pro Max.
